Shab-eh-nay

A formal photographic portrait of the Potowatomi chief Shab-eh-nay (Shau-be-na, or Shabbona), who died in 1859. Shab-eh-nay was photographed shortly before his death, but this print was made from a later copy negative. This image is part of an exhibit about Native Americans prepared by Paul Vanderbilt, the Wisconsin Historical Society's first curator of photography. |
