Wisconsin State Capitol Interior — Senate

Wisconsin State Capitol Interior — Senate | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
The only known visual documentation of the Senate Chamber in the third Wisconsin Capitol. It was probably more colorful than it appears here. In 1869 a reporter described the Senate walls as stippled in delicate lilac, with a white ceiling, and cornice ornamentation in pink. Maude Keene Gill, the daughter of an assemblyman, who saw the Senate during the early 1880s, remembered only that the room was done in white and pink. She was more impressed with the large gas chandeliers. "I hope I kept my mouth closed the first time I saw the man light it; it was a work of time, with a contrivance which first turned on the gas, and then lit it with a taper." The black & white 1899 photograph does not answer the question of whether those descriptions matched the circumstances in 1899.
