View of Wisconsin State Capitol (Third)

View, ca. 1873-1879, of Madison looking down Wisconsin Avenue toward the third Wisconsin Capitol, a view that suggests something of the ongoing importance of the Capitol building in the Madison urban landscape. The building that partially blocks the view of the Capitol is the U.S. Post Office. View from the William F. Vilas House on the corner of East Gilman and Wisconsin Avenue. Seen are the Capitol, City Hall and the Park Hotel. Entitled "Central View of the City from Yankee Hill" in Dahl's 1877 "Catalogue of Stereoscopic Views." From the series, "Views of the City of Madison, Wisconsin." |
