Wisconsin State Capitol Park Entrance
View of one of the four Prairie du Chien stone gateways that stood at the four corner entrances to the Capitol Park. More elaborate gates topped with iron statues stood at the center of each side of the park. The postcard also illustrates the electric lights that replaced the earlier gas lights. This postcard is postmarked 1909, indicating that depictions of the old Capitol continued to be sold even after the fire of 1904. The stone pillars remained in place until the present Capitol was completed (about 1917). The fire hydrant that was useless during the Capitol fire according to an ironic note. Caption reads: "Entrance to Capitol Park, Madison, Wis." |
