Surveying Fire Damage
Ruins of the second floor of the North Wing (looking south), after the fire that destroyed most of the third Wisconsin State Capitol. In addition to the charred timbers, this close-up reveals some of the decorative details of a metal circular staircase. The specifications for the 1882 addition provides additional information: "All stair rails to be made of oak moulded and grooved over the iron band, and secured firmly thereto; to be one piece for each flight; the oak to be thoroughly kiln dried and must be free from knots, checks or cross grains." |
