Breaker Boy

Andrew Chippa hired on with Markle & Co., miners of anthracite coal to pay off his father's debt of $54 to the company store since his father's death in the mines. Young Chippa was one of a number of miners to testify against the company about working conditions in the Coal Strike Hearings. His debt, rather than being paid off, has risen to $88.17, as indicated by the IOU he holds due to purchases for his mother and three siblings. |
