Drawing
Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin in 1830

The first Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien, with the Mississippi River in the foreground. Although dated 1830, this scene was actually painted by Henry Lewis in 1848 and published in Germany in 1854 as "The Valley of the Mississippi." Lewis relied heavily on the work of his friend, fellow artist, and soldier Seth Eastman who was stationed at the fort in 1830, so his depiction can be considered accurate. Because of the frequent flooding of the Mississippi River, a second Fort Crawford was built on higher ground and occupied about 1831. |
