Museum object # 1984.294.1. Made by Cecilia Goold (Lewis) Carman (1791-1855) of New York, donor Alice (Palmer) Washington's maternal great-grandmother. Cecilia was born on January 12, 1791 in Flushing (Queens County), NY, the daughter of Francis Lewis (1750-1814) and Elizabeth Ludlow (b. 1755). On March 3, 1818 she married Samuel Carman (c. 1788-1859), a physician. In 1850 the Carmans are living in Ridgeway (Orleans Co.), NY. In 1854 the Carmans were listed as members of Madison's First Congregational Church. In 1855 Samuel was listed in the Madison, WI city directory and the census of the same year shows him in a household with 3 men and 3 women. The couple had two daughters, Cecilia and Sarah, and two sons, Foreman and Peter Lewis. Cecilia died December 12, 1855. Samuel died May 2, 1859. Cecilia probably brought the sampler with her when she moved west between 1850 and 1854. |
