To Move Monument Five Miles
View of the Ames monument, built to memorialize Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames Jr., who were instrumental in completing the Union Pacific portion of the transcontinental railroad. Caption reads: "To Move Monument Five Miles. Thirty seven years ago there was erected on the summit of the Rocky Mountains, a monument to Oakes and Oliver Ames, constructors of the first railroad across the Rocky Mountains. To shorten the line of the railroad and reduce the grade, the railroad has moved five miles from its original site, and as the monument could not be viewed from the new line, it will be necessary to move it the same distance. The Ames monument is built of granite in the form of a pyramid, sixty feet square at the base and sixty feet high. It will be taken down stone at a time and carried on wagons and "snow boats" across the five miles of mountain crest to its new site, just east of the Sherman station." |
