Brigadier General Benjamin Alvord
Quarter-length portrait of Brigadier General Benjamin Alvord, a soldier, mathematician, and botanist. Alvord fought in the Seminole Wars with the 4th U.S. Infantry, then in the Mexican-American War, where he was promoted to major. During the Civil War he was brigadier general in charge of volunteers. In addition to military service, he was a professor of mathematics at West Point; after the Civil War he studied Apollonius' Problem. He also wrote about natural history, specifically about the compass plant. |
