Vignetted waist-up carte-de-visite portrait of Pliney [some sources spell it "Pliny"] Alford, a riverboat captain on the Mississippi River. Caption reads: "First went on Miss. River as cabin boy, next became steward, then pilot. About 1851 built steamer 'White Cloud,' then bought stern wheeler 'Denny.' Entered employ of 'Northern Line Co.' and ran to St. Paul. Was on river all his life. Died in 1862." |
