He enlisted in Berdan's Sharpshooters (Wisconsin Company G) in 1862, then served in several capacities for different units over the years. He was captain of the 41st U.S. Infantry during the Indian Wars, from which he received the Medal of Honor. After his military career, he helped develop the Hotchkiss rifle for the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, CT. |
