Quarter-length portrait of a woman. Caption reads: "ABBOTT, Mrs. Emily S. (wife Dr. S.W. Abbott) Emily Clapp Abbott b. May 25, 1832; died Chippewa Falls Rutledge Homed [sic] for Aged Nov. 9, 1921. Married at Janesville 1850 to Dr. Simeon W. Abbott. Abbott graduated Eastern medical school 1848; practiced Janesville 10 years before moving to Monroe 1858 to enter mercantile business. Appointed sutler 31st Wis. Regiment. Took up law after Civil War; elected justice of peace (Served 30 years); also engaged in real estate, insurance, etc. Monroe school board clerk many terms. Died Jan. 2, 1896, in home after stroke few hours earlier. Couple had no children and reared several girls from less fortunate families. Members Universalist Church; Emily Aid Society president several terms. Charter member and first vice president several terms. Charter member and first vice president of Woman's Club of Monroe 1884; president 1891-1892." |
