Reverend Monseigneur P. M. Abbelen
Oval-framed quarter-length portrait of Reverend Monseigneur Peter Matthias Abbelen, who was vicar general of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and later spiritual director for the School Sisters of Notre Dame. He petitioned the Vatican in 1886 to recognize German-speaking parishes in the United States in parallel with English-speaking parishes, but the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith ruled against him. In 1892 he wrote a biography of the Venerable Mother M. Caroline Friess, first commissary general of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in America, entitled Die ehrwürdige Mutter Maria Carolina Friess, erste General-Commissärin der Schulschwestern von Notre Dame : ein Lebens- und Charakter- Bild. |
