The buildings are surrounded by lawns, sidewalks and trees. The facility was opened in 1873 as the Northern State Hospital for the Insane. In the 1930s, the name was changed to Winnebago State Hospital and changed again in the 1970s to Winnebago Mental Health Institute. |
