Northern State Hospital for the Insane

Text on front reads: "Front of Asylum, Winnebago, Wis." A four-story building built of stone with arched windows and a three-story balcony. Trees line the lanes into the facility. Opened in 1873 as the Northern State Hospital for the Insane, the building was finished in 1875. In the 1930s, the name was changed to Winnebago State Hospital. The building was gradually demolished in the 1950s and 1960s as new construction took place. The name was changed again in the 1970s, to Winnebago Mental Health Institute. |
