Birge Fountain
Text on front reads: "Birge Fountain. Whitewater, Wis." The Neoclassical-style Birge Fountain, located in Flat Iron Park. Mythical figures decorate the foot of the structure and a woman pouring water from a basket tops the fountain. Below her are dolphin-riding cherubs. Beyond the fountain is a street with homes and trees. Today, the fountain stands in front of the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce Building. From the Property Record on the Wisconsin Historical Society website: "the Birge Fountain, which was donated to the city by Julius Birge in 1903. The fountain is 17.5 feet high and 9 feet in diameter. Julius required that the fountain be placed on the site of the little brick school where he learned to read and write." |
