Stoneware Vase
Stoneware vase is ovoid-shaped with a flared rim. It is gray with a salt-glaze. The dark brown on the lower body and the top of the neck may be caused by applying a light wash of iron during the firing to achieve the colored effect. The bottom of the piece is glazed, while the top is not, meaning the piece was likely fired upside-down. The interior of the piece is glazed with a dark brown slip. The rim has a band of incised hatching. The neck has incised leaves and vines, a band of hatching, two bands of intersecting circles, and another band of hatching. The upper body has small stamped quatrefoils and applied flowers, festoons, and floral s-shaped motifs. The lower body has a band of hatching, incised foliate scrolls, and long incised lines near the base. A maker's mark, "SF", and date, "1893", are incised on the underside. |
