Newsletter Photo Souvenir

Newsletter Photo Souvenir | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Front and back pages of a fake, humorous newsletter titled Dells Events. The front page includes a color picture of a man (John Trumble) wearing a straw-brimmed hat and looking surprised (or scared) going over a waterfall in a barrel. The image is part of a fictional news story about "a fantastic event captured on film" and is surrounded by articles that refer to Dells tourism and attractions. The back page shows a mugshot of Black Bart as "Wanted" beneath a story about his train robbery at Fort Dells and a cheeky ad for the Wood Tick Inn.

The newsletter is a two-fold mailer designed to frame the photograph, and the mailer also serves as an advertisement and order form for reprints. It was created by Dells Photo Service, owned and operated by John Trumble. He created the barrel scene as a fun background for portrait customers visiting his studio and "pitcher gallery" at Fort Dells. The scene shows the drop between the Upper and Lower Dells on the Wisconsin River at Kilbourn dam. In the background, High Rock is on the right, and Romance Cliff on the left. This souvenir with the photographer's picture is a sample.
