Camp Kiwanis

Camp Kiwanis | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Group portrait of Kiwanis Club members and several boys assembled in front of the Camp Kiwanis cabin in Lincoln Park. The boys may be part of Boy Scout Troop 12, which was sponsored by the club. The Manitowoc Boy Scout Council had its summer camp, Camp Sinawa, at Pigeon Lake. Camp Kiwanis, in Lincoln Park was its winter camp. Girl Scouts and other environmental and civic groups also made use of the facilities. Kiwanis Club members originally constructed the log building in 1923, mainly with their own labor, on city-owned property just north of what is now Reed Avenue and just west of the Little Manitowoc River. The building, which was 24 x 40 feet, had 16 double-bunks, cookstove, heating stove and a rustic fireplace constructed with colored field stones from the nearby, city gravel pits. The river wound its way through the flats one hundred feet to the east of the camp. The site was ideal for work in forestry, skating and skiing. Each troop reserved the shack, as it was called, for one or more weekends from fall through spring for overnight camping and scout activities. The cabin was moved to Lincoln Park late in 1932 because it was frequently damaged by hoodlums and used by hobos as a place to sleep.
