Seated, waist-up portrait of Emil A. Weber (1883-1961), marine contractor and secretary-treasurer of the McMullen & Pitz Construction Company. The firm was established in 1915 by Oliver R. McMullen and Arthur H. Pitz. Oliver McMullen, president of the company, sold his interest in the business to Emil A. Weber in 1926. Mr. Weber, a native of Menominee, Michigan, graduated in 1908 from the University of Illinois, Urbana, School of Engineering. He became the company's president after the death of Mr. Pitz in 1941. Willott Pitz, son of Arthur Pitz, succeeded Emil Weber as company president after his death in 1961. Wright's Manitowoc City Directory of 1932 advertises McMullen & Pitz Construction Co., Marine Contractors and Engineers, A.H. Pitz, President and Emil A. Weber, Secretary-Treasurer. Services included pile driving, dredging, heavy timber work, dock and crib work, foundations, concrete construction, bridges, submarine diving, scow building, towing and wrecking. Office and yard on the corner of 10th and Commercial Streets (now Maritime Drive). Construction projects included the 1921 Tenth Street bascule bridge, substructure of the 1926 Eighth Street bascule bridge, replacement of the old Twenty-First Street bridge with a steel and concrete span in 1951, and a modern bridge structure in Manitowoc Rapids completed in 1955 for the relocation of Highway 119 and new Hwy. 141 bypass. Crews constructed a water intake pipe from the lake to Rahr Malting Company in 1935 and a pipeline parallel to the lake intake pipe of the municipal electric plant to eliminate needle ice formation in 1936. In 1937, piling was driven and excavation work done for sixteen new storage silos at the Wisconsin Malting Company on S. Nineteenth Street. A runaway, 115 ton submerged diesel and box car were raised from the Two Rivers harbor in 1958 using a large derrick barge. In many communities along the lakeshore, McMullen & Pitz laid submarine water mains, gas mains, power and telephone cables, dredged river bottoms and built and repaired bridges and other structures. The McMullen & Pitz Construction Company continues to provide marine and heavy construction services under the ownership and operation of the Pitz family as of 2019. |
