Edward J. Carlier
Standing, three-quarter length portrait of Edward J. Carlier (1893-1954) posing with an elbow resting on tires and a pencil and papers in his hands. Established in 1926 at 708 York Street, Carlier Tire Service relocated the following year to larger facilities at 718-720 Commercial Street (now Maritime Drive). The company offered new and used tires, tire repairing and 24-hour road service, which was an uncommon practice at the time. Battery sales and service were added in 1932. Newspaper advertisements stated they repaired rubber bathing suits, as well. Mr. Carlier creatively promoted his business. He drove a car up the courthouse steps to demonstrate the durability of ballon tires, which were introduced in the 1920s. During inclement weather, he drove around the county and reported road conditions back to a local radio station. In 1936 he sold the business to his brother-in-law, Ray L. Timm. Carlier also had an appliance business. His inventive nature led him to create and manufacture gas and electric appliances, including a gas toaster, and to other business pursuits. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Service in World War I, working as an aircraft mechanic at Rockwell Field in California. He was a charter member of both the Last Man's Club, made up of WWI veterans, in 1927 and Forty et Eight, Manitowoc County Voiture (boxcar), No. 1130, in 1934. In 1933 he was named commander of the American Legion, Guy Drews Post. |
