Caption with negative: "Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pakonen, Iron Mountain, Mich., shown with [sic] in their cottage yard with the skin of a bear Pakonen and another colonist, Harry Nichols, shot from the porch of Pakonen's new home. Mrs. Pakonen fainted in Nichols' driveway when running for help." Russell is wearing a mosquito net on his hat. Caption with print reads: "Late July, 1935. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pakonen, Iron Mountain Mich. shown in their cottage yard with 400 lb. bear Pakonen and colonist Harry Nichols shot from porch of Pakonen's new home. Mrs. Pakonen fainted in Nichols driveway when running for help. Pakonen said bear's hid nine feet long. It was against law to shoot black bear at that time, but Pakonem and Nichols claimed self defense." |
