Harvey J. Stangel

Portrait of Harvey Jacob Stangel (1903-2004), secretary-treasurer of the J.J. Stangel Hardware Company, seated at his desk. His father, Jacob J. Stangel, established the business in 1917 in a new three-story brick structure on the southeast corner of S. 8th and Quay Streets. After Jacob's death in 1922, his sons, Arthur and Harvey, took over management of the company. It was a retail and wholesale hardware business with branch automotive stores in Sturgeon Bay and Sheboygan. Its wholesale territory covered northeastern Wisconsin. As an active community leader, Harvey was involved in the Manitowoc Boy Scout Council and several civic and conservation organizations. He established a tree farm on eighty acres of land east of St. Nazianz. His farm provided many young people in F.F.A., Scouting and other educational groups the opportunity to plant trees and train in conservation by studying soils, forestry and wildlife management. Honored for his contributions by the local group Conservation Education, Inc. in 1962, the Manitowoc Herald Times stated "Stangel was cited as an outstanding example of a man whose love for people and for nature has made him an ardent supporter and worker in the field of conservation, giving freely of time, thoughts, energies, spare time and financially." |
