Ralph G. Plumb

Portrait of Ralph Gordon Plumb (1881-1976), president of the Plumb & Nelson Company, seated at his desk. The company was a wholesale grocery business at 718 Buffalo Street. It was established as a retail business by his father under the name J.E. Plumb & Bro. in 1873. John E. Plumb and his younger, half-brother Julius C. Nelson were dealers in groceries and provisions, flour and feed, according to early newspaper advertisements. By 1893 the firm had been changed from a retail to a wholesale enterprise. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1901, Ralph joined the family business. He became its president in 1923. During his college years in Madison, he spent much of his free time at the State Historical Society Library accumulating data from archived newspapers covering fifty years of Manitowoc's early growth. He published "A History of Manitowoc County" in 1904, "Born in the Eighties" in 1940 and several additional works of local, state and national history. He was very involved in civic affairs and organizations. In 1922, he was a founding member and the first president of the Manitowoc Kiwanis club. |
