Monkeys Escape Vilas Zoo
A zookeeper poses with a net and three large box traps. Thirty-eight Rhesus monkeys escaped from the basement of the Vilas zoo monkey house on August 4, 1960. Sixteen were captured right away but it took until December 5 to capture the rest. The original caption states: "Dale Coyier, Vilas park zookeeper, poses with the equipment which has been used in capturing the Rhesus monkeys which escaped. The box traps, baited with fresh fruit, succeeded in boxing 31 of the 38 escapees. The heavy gloves he holds are used to prevent the monkeys from biting and scratching. Of the seven monkeys still loose, four are still in the zoo area, and three have disappeared." |
