An accompanying text read: "Mr. Pentice is in the picture on other side near the horses. The team and wagon belonged to my Uncle James Shanks Towers. Holding the reins is Paul Mueller, Uncle James' hired man at the time and with whom I went to school in Joint School Dist. #8. The man seated at the rear of the wagon is Ex-Senator George Staudenmayer and the and the fellow standing in the wagon box is his brother William Staudenmayer who was running the mill at that time. Robert Jones, a second cousin of mine (1st cousin of Mother's) is standing near the building on the ground. My father has taken many a "grist of wheat" to this old mill to have ground into flour and of course when I wasn't in school was always anxious to go along. "Mr. and Mrs. Prentice had a very beautiful daughter and her name was Evangeline. "The Prentice Mill was built in 1874 near Durwards Glen of stone from the locality which was hewn by hand to fit. Above the door was a marble slab bearing the date 1874 but this is not visible in the picture. Grant Albert who was born and raised near Durwards Glen tells me the slab was "rescued" at the time the Mill was torn down and used as a step at the farm home near where the Mill once stood. Mitchell remembered when the Mill was torn down in 1912. "Mae Steele Meikle" |
