Text on back of print reads: "Arville Schaleben*, as reporter for Milwaukee Journal, primarily, and The Detroit News and 26 other major U.S. Newspaper[sic], including the N.Y. Times, for the 1935 'New Deal' establishment of a colony in the Matanuska Valley of Alaska. That's a mosquito net around my hat, the saying was: 'The mosquitos are big enough to stand flat flooted and ____ a turkey.' I used it by substituting the word 'fight.' In the first days our 'latrines' were, usually, a fallen logs in the woods. Some of the construction workers for awhile had a contest going on who got the most bites on his buttocks while performing bodily functions. *I was 28. Became city editor start of next year. Retired 1972." |
