UW Graduate Teaching Assistant Gets Post at Lycoming College
Sigmund Birkenmayer, a graduate teaching assistant in Slavic languages at the University of Wisconsin, has been appointed an assistant professor in Russian and Spanish at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. He came to the United States from Warsaw, Poland in 1946 as an exchange student. His father, Joseph, had come to Madison nine years earlier as an exchange professor and had served as chairman of the Polish Department. Professor Birkenmayer returned to Poland and was killed during World War II. |
