Tunnel Tree

The three children of Herbert P. and Margaret Bouer Brumder are posing on and near the family's 1935 Oldsmobile sedan, which is parked in a tunnel built through the trunk of a tree. They are, from left, Philip, Barbara and Herbert Edmund Brumder. A sign identifying the tree reads: "WAWONA 26' THROUGH THE OPENING — CUT IN 1881." The tree stood in the Mariposa Sequoia Grove in Yosemite National Park until it fell under the weight of snow in 1969. |
