Bird's-Eye View of Manitowoc

Bird's-Eye View of Manitowoc | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Bird's-eye view of Manitowoc taken from Northern Grain Company's Elevator B, facing southeast. South Main (Tenth) Street intersects with Franklin Street in center-left. Along the city skyline, the William Rahr Sons brewery, malt house and elevator complex is on the left. The First German Evangelical Lutheran Church and School are in the center, with Lake Michigan in the background. In the foreground, along the Manitowoc River from left to right are Chris Schoch Lumber Yard, Bigel & Guse Planing Mill & Building Contractors and the mill and warehouse previously known as Wisconsin Central Mills, owned by Jacob Fliegler. The three-story brick mill has a dust collector room on the roof. A spur track crosses South Water Street. In 1892, fire destroyed the Manitowoc Manufacturing Company, which occupied the triangle-shaped block between Franklin, South Twelfth and South Water Streets. The triangular corner of the block is in view on the right. The fire resulted in the failure of the T.C. Shove Banking Company and consequent closing of Jacob Fliegler's and Truman and Cooper's mills. The bank had been heavily invested in all three concerns, most heavily in the Manitowoc Manufacturing Company, and the huge fire loss caused it to be insolvent. Fliegler's mill was unoccupied for several years as lawsuits were settled and property sold. In 1898, the Manitowoc Pea Packing Company was formed and factory buildings erected on the site of the 1892 fire. Fliegler's mill, across the street, was purchased in 1899 and remodeled for its use as a warehouse, cold storage facility and offices.
