"Kerpner Kirmis" indicates that this is an outdoor festival of the style held in Kerpen, Germany (near Cologne) when many in the Ashton area originated. The bird was a carved wooden target mounted high on a pole at which contestants could shoot for an entrance fee. Prize money was awarded for various parts and for shooting the target off the pole. This event was attended by Charles E. Brown who kept that target for Wisconsin Historical Museum collections. It was deaccessioned in 1919. |
