Locomotive and Steam Shovel

An elevated view of a steam locomotive and rail mounted steam shovel, probably in the Culebra Cut, during construction of the Panama Canal. Men are seen on and around the equipment. The steam shovel, identified only as U.S. 258, was wrecked in a landslide May 29, 1913. The Bucyrus Foundry and Manufacturing Company of South Milwaukee supplied the majority of steam shovels used in building the canal. |
