Parade Day
Two milk wagons from Smazel's Guernsey Dairy draw the attention of children in the street and bystanders on the sidewalk during a parade traveling east on Washington Street. The view of the block between S. 9th and S. 10th Streets is taken from the Glander Building by Henry J. Glander. In the foreground, his sister, Carmen Glander Somerville, is captured looking up from the street below. Businesses along the south side of the street include, from left to right, Krieg's Meat Market, an empty storefront with posters announcing "Beckman & Gerety, Worlds Best Shows" and the Hessel Music House. Signs on the brick wall of the adjacent alleyway designate Quality Service Garage, which is at the rear of the lot, and "Terraplane Sales and Service Hudson." A large projecting Frigidaire sign advertises the businesses of Westphal-Crull-Buckley--Frigidaire, radios and washers and, also, Westphal's Paint and Hardware. Smazel's Guernsey Dairy, located at 934 S. 21st Street, was owned by William Smazel. The company advertised prompt delivery to all homes in the city and sold pasteurized milk and cream, buttermilk and cottage cheese. Under new owners by 1940, its name was changed to Manitowoc Guernsey Dairy. |
