Group portrait of five women, who are household employees, standing together in front of the original Cook’s Cabin, which burned down following a lightning strike, one winter in the 1960s. There is a birch tree and a metal wash tub on the left. The caption, which has faded, reads: "Minnie Vendt, Ella Viester, Mrs. -----, Ella Kielel, Katie B------." |

According to Shan Holt, Lucy Holt's great granddaughter, in August 2018, "Minnie Vendt was the long-time cook for W. A. and Lucy at 523 Main St in Oconto, and I believe lived in the house. My grandfather (Don, Sr.) once told the story that Lucy chastised W. A. for failing ever to compliment Minnie on her cooking, which he in fact enjoyed very much. His reply, apparently, was that if he should once pay Minnie a compliment, and then not do so another time, she would believe that the second meal had been unacceptable. Rather than risk that misunderstanding, he gave no compliments at all. It was a tough world to grow up in, I think." |
