Steering Wheel of Bob Bender's Cab
Interior view of the steering wheel, dash, and foot pedals of Bob Bender's deluxe limousine cab named "Nellie," a black 1956 Cadillac Fleetwood. Flat rate fees are written on the dash above the radio: "$10.00 per hour or 50 cents per mile" and a "25 cent toll gate charge at airport to be paid by the customer" per ordnance #2195. The odometer reads: "99999.960." He and Nellie reportedly racked up 250 miles a day on average since 1957, when he purchased the car used; at that time it had 40,000 miles on it. In May 1981, Nellie had 993,000 miles; and in August 1982, it was about 1,003,000. Bender owned the company, "R.L. Bender Deluxe Cab Limousine Service," that ran passengers with an additional fleet of later model taxis between the Dane County Regional Airport and Madison downtown. |
