Bob Bender on South Carroll Street with "Nellie"
View across sidewalk towards Robert "Bob" Bender standing behind the hood of his shiny 9-passenger black 1956 Cadillac Fleetwood, the flagship taxi of the cab company, which he named "Nellie." He is wearing a chauffeur hat, and his reflection can be seen on the hood. The sign on the rear door advertises the "R.L. Bender Deluxe Cab Limousine Service," and the front door reads "Flat Rate" listing a contact phone number in Madison. The license plate number is E97-070. He is standing on South Carroll Street at his usual taxi stand in front of the Park Hotel at the corner of South Hamilton Street. In the background is the Capitol Building. Bender bought the used Sixty Special model with paired tail fins in 1957, washing it every morning with cold water only, no soap or wax. |
