Jo Ann Ulvestad Returns Home After Three-Month Polio Treatment | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
The Orris Ulvestad family members, 4309 Drexel Avenue, welcome home Jo Ann after she spent three months in a respiratory center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was stricken with polio two years ago [1955] and spent months in an iron lung at the University of Wisconsin hospital before she went home in a chest respirator in a rocking bed. The respirator was discarded and she now spends several hours a day in a specially designed wheelchair. Shown standing around Jo Ann (15) are (left to right): her sister Lois (11) holding family cat, Goldie; mother, Mrs. Ulvestad; grandmother Mrs. Bertha Hamre; sister Arleen (7); and brother Larry (12). Jo Ann has a large bouquet of chrysanthemums next to her.
