Walter Vail Johnston, far left, and his wife June Crandall Johnston, second from left, posing with their six children in front of their large house on Dean Road. The entire family is on horseback, with the youngest son, John Keith Crandall Johnston, at far right on a pony. The others are, from third left, left to right, "Wallie," Walter Vail Johnston Jr.; "Sis," June Ellen Johnston (Mrs. William George) Brumder; "Ned" Edward Crandall Johnston; David Crandall Johnston; and "Patsy," Patricia Johnston, later Mrs. Harald "Shorty" Pabst. The men and boys are wearing jodhpurs and the women are riding side saddle. The horses have English saddles. A camera case is lying on the ground in front of Ned. The names of several of the horses are also included in a caption on the reverse of the photograph. |

Walter Vail Johnston ran the Robert A. Johnston Company, manufacturer of cookies and confections, which was founded by his father. Marquette University's Johnston Hall, built in 1907, was named for Robert A. Johnston, a benefactor of the University. June Johnston Brumder and her husband, William G. Brumder were married in 1932 and at the time of this photograph were living with her family in the Johnston home. |
