Founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1883, the mission of the Boys' Brigade was to build character. According to Boys' Brigade founder and Presbyterian Church sunday school teacher William Smith, "the object of the Boys' Brigade shall be the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among boys, and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends toward a true Christian manliness." Boys' Brigade came to the United States in 1887 with the first company being established in St. Louis, MO. "By 1893, the United States counted more than 220 companies with more than 14,000 boys enlisted." The Boys' Brigade emphasized physical fitness, camping, and outdoor activities.
