George and Anna Marie Brumder

A seated, three-quarter length portrait of a clean shaven young man, and a young woman with a large fabric headpiece. Gold decoration has been applied to the image over the woman's bodice. A notation on the reverse states: "George Brumder and sister Anna Marie just prior to migration to America in May 1857." Natives of Breuschwickersheim, Alsace, the pair traveled together to Milwaukee, where Anna Marie was married to Gottlieb Reim, a Lutheran pastor, on August 17, 1857. |

A colleague of Reim, and the officiant of the wedding, was Pastor William Streissguth. At the time, Streissguth was married to Marie Eva Brumder, a sister of George and Anna. Marie had immigrated to America several years earlier. After Marie died in childbirth (August 25, 1857), Streissguth married another Brumder sister, Magdalena. Both Streissguth and Reim served as president of the Wisconsin Synod in its early years. |
