Northern Wisconsin Produce Company

Northern Wisconsin Produce Company | Postcard | Wisconsin Historical Society
View across street towards the warehouse and cold storage building of the Northern Wisconsin Produce Company at 1310 Clark Street. Two workmen are icing the freight cars. Ice is made in 300 pound blocks in the ice house on the second floor of the cold storage at the far end of the facility. Using long, hooked poles, the workmen slide the blocks along the shipping dock roof onto the cars, dropping them into spaces on both ends. Before mechanical refrigeration, ice was used to keep cheese and produce cold during shipping. The Northern Wisconsin Produce Company was incorporated in 1907 by Stanley Eckels, Charles E. Spindler and Gustave Lindemann. They purchased the cold storage facility of the Northern Grain Company on the northeast corner of S. 6th and Quay Streets, of which Stanley Eckels had been the manager. Mr. Eckels became the head of the new company and manager, when it opened in 1908. The new plant, opening in 1925, was built on the site known as Truman's Hill at S. 14th and Clark Streets at a cost exceeding $100,000. The hill was cut down, and a modern, brick cold storage and produce shipping plant was built by Schuette Construction Company. A spur track entered the grounds from the adjacent Chicago & North Western Rail Road's main lines. The firm was a wholesaler of cheese, butter, margarine, eggs, and other farm products. At this time, the officers of the company were Stanley D. Eckels, Victor Trastek and Gustave Lindemann. The Northern Wisconsin Produce Company is owned and operated by fourth generation members of the Lindemann family as a cheese and cold storage business, as of 2018.
