George Holt Under the "H"
In the foreground is the bow of the Islander steam launch. George Holt, sitting in a clinker-built duck boat just beyond the launch, is holding the paddle with two hands. Above him, nailed to the tree, is hanging the "H," which was made of birch branches by Lucy Holt and Juliet Rumsey Stroh. The "H" stands for Hermit. In the background is the tree-lined shoreline of Hermit Island. Caption reads: "George Holt." |

"Clinker built is a method of boat building where the edges of the hull planks overlap," similar to shingles. This technique is also called lapstrake. An example of clinker construction is a Viking longship. (Source: Wikipedia). |
