Two Escape as Dirt Jostles House
A policeman and a night watchman narrowly escaped injury when a huge mound of excavated dirt fell on a house adjacent to the new State Office building construction site at the foot of South Carroll Street. LaVerne Zastrow, watchman for the J. P. Cullen and Son construction firm, was sleeping on the third floor when the rear and side of the house collapsed about 3 a.m. Policeman Edward Daly was entering the building to investigate "splitting" noises and jumped to safety before timbers fell. Heavy rains apparently caused the dirt mound to shift about six feet onto the house, which was used as an office by the Cullen firm.. It is scheduled to be razed along with an adjacent house to make a parking lot. |
