Quarter-length portrait of a man wearing a suit and tie, with three medals pinned to his chest. This is Dr. Joseph Bellamy Whiting, who was a physician in Janesville. He was the commissioned surgeon to the 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. In 1875 he was unanimously appointed president of the Wisconsin State Medical Association. He was also on the Board of Trustees for the State School for the Blind. In 1889 President Cleveland appointed Dr. Whiting to a commission addressing the Chippewa [Ojibwe] Indians. Dr. Whiting died on March 27, 1905. |
