Florence, county seat of the flourishing new county of Florence, situated in the northeastern portion of Wisconsin, on the line of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad, about 300 miles north of Chicago. Surrounded by the most beautiful works of the great Architect, this new town that has sprung from an unbroken wilderness to a bustling place of 3,000 inhabitants in three years, presents many unusual advantages for obtaining the necessaries [sic] of life, obtaining the wealth of a Croesus or securing and cherishing that greatest of all boons; Perfect health. The air is bracing indeed and healthful in the extreme as it comes wafted through the whispering pines and invigorating balsams, from the bosoms of two great inland seas; Superior and Michigan. The climate is unusually healthy and the evenness of temperature found here is a great rarity the world over. The summers are always cool and the winters dry and unchangeable, Florence county possesses great timber, mineral and agricultural wealth. The season of 1885 will see it traversed by two new lines of railway, the Milwaukee & Northern and Minneapolis, Sault Ste Marie & Atlantic — giving us a competing line to Chicago and an outlet to a vast new territory whose demands are for those articles which we so readily produce and whose excesses are our wants. Iron exists in unlimited quantities and two great mines, which have already shipped hundreds of thousands of tons of ore, have been developed within the county's confines, while many other valuable deposits only await the magic touch of the pick and shovel. Gold, silver, copper and mica have been found in quantities sufficient to lead experienced men to believe that they exist in large deposits in Florence county. The excellent water powers, many useful woods and valuable minerals combine to present a galaxy of splendid manufacturing advantages. Pine abounds, and the valuable hard woods, such as bird's eye maple, go far towards making up our forests. The farmer can obtain good lands at very low prices, the clearing of which will pay for them. He can raise anything congenial to this latitude, such as winter wheat, cats [sic], barley, rye, timothy, clover, potatoes, rutabagos [sic] and in fact all kinds of vegetables, for which he can obtain good market value at home. To the sportsman, tourist or artist this region presents unrivaled attraction. Deer, bear, wolves, lynx, trout, bass pickerel, muscalonge [sic], pheasants, ducks, and many other species of game are here in plenty for the sportsman to dally with. Beautiful lakes, grand forests, picturesque rivers, inspiring glens, romantic canons, majestic dalles, roaring falls and everything else that is interesting in nature exists here, to please the tourist and throw the artist into ecstasy. Then why should people travel thousands of miles from the centres of civilization to obtain less, when all of this honestly exists 300 miles north of Chicago. Florence county possesses better prospects and presents more advantages to settlers than any prairie country and we invite a comparison of the facilities afforded by both.
