Cave of the Mounds
Arthur Pond, wearing knickers, heavy stockings, a coat and hat is standing admiring the walls in the Cave of the Mounds. On the reverse of the photograph is the caption: "Above the cave['s] onyx 'glacier' hang rare black and white ribbons of stone striped as evenly as if woven on a loom. These are found no where else in the world except in a cave in Iceland. The black stripes are colored by oxide of manganese which sometimes stain the lime-saturated water which trickled along the ceiling and dripped off to the ledge (left) forming the black knobs, Black Druids guarding the beauty of the cavern." |
