Waist-up studio portrait of John August Glander at 53 years of age, founder and owner of the Glander Art Studio from 1908-1953. He is holding a cigar. Considered to be one of the state's most talented portrait and commercial photographers, he documented the Manitowoc area for over 50 years with still photos and film work of events, people, commerce and industry including shipbuilding, launchings and coverage of the WWII submarine program. His portrait work was widely recognized and included images of nationally and internationally known personalities. He photographed President Franklin D. Roosevelt speaking in Green Bay in 1932, "Fighting Bob," Robert M. La Follette, Sr., whose portraits were used in his run for president of the U.S., Senator Joseph McCarthy and many Wisconsin and local political and business leaders, musicians and artists. An active member of the Wisconsin Photographers Association for many years, he occupied the posts of secretary, vice president and president in the 1920's. Mr. Glander conducted his studio as a family venture. His brother, William, joined him as a photographer and manager. Many family members joined the business, and in 1925, his son, Henry J. Glander, began working professionally alongside his father, eventually taking over after his father's death in 1953. The Glander Art Studio operated from 1908 until 1972, when Henry J. Glander retired.
