Washington Street Repaving & Widening
Crews of the Vinton Construction Co. are laying a 20 foot wide concrete slab in front of the northeast corner of Washington and S. 9th Streets. A truck is dumping dry ingredients into a loading skip to be mixed into the next batch of concrete. Men are spreading fresh concrete discharged from the mixer/paver and leveling it with a power screed. The Washington Street project covered 7 blocks, from S. 8th to S. 15 Street, closing the street to traffic from June through October, 1948. After the preparation work was completed in August, repaving got underway at the 15th Street end of the street. Crews began laying a concrete slab on the south side of the roadbed with expectations that it would be completed to 8th Street within five days. The mixer then returned to 15th Street to lay a parallel strip on the north side of the road. Their final steps included paving to the curb, putting in curbs and rebuilding sidewalks torn up for street widening. The newly paved portion of the street no longer had overhead electrical wires. New 30-foot concrete ornamental light standards (pillars) were placed along the curbs. The repaved and widened section of the street was 56 feet wide from curb to curb, with four 10-foot traffic lanes and an 8-foot parallel parking lane on each side. When the street reopened, a gala parade and dedication ceremony was held. The businesses behind the truck and paver in the 800 block of Washington Street are the Book and Gift Shop, the Glander Art Studio and Jensen's. In the 900 block, signs identify Napp Office and School Supply Co., Arctic Ice Cream Bar, Johnson Electric and Radio Shop, and the Tasty Crispy Soda Grill. In the distance is the power stack and upper level of an old brewery building marked with a sign for Borris Furniture. |
