Glander Art Studio, Book and Gift Shop & Jensen's | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
View across street towards the Glander Building, built by photographer John A. Glander, on the northeast corner of S. 9th and Washington Streets. The Glander Art Studio, 822 Washington Street, occupies the second floor and right side of the ground and lower level. The Book and Gift Shop, 824 Washington Street, occupies the left side. The adjoining building, also owned by Glander, is occupied by Jensen's. The word "GLANDER" appears as a graphic design in the second floor window. Studio workrooms were on the 2nd floor of this building. This image appears in the <i>Manitowoc Herald-Times'</i> Washington Street paving edition of Nov. 3, 1948. Concrete paving has replaced the old brick and asphalt street. The photograph's caption states that the Glander Art Studio is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Services and items offered are portrait and commercial photography, picture framing, frames, pictures for decoration, Eastman Kodaks, Kodak finishing and Spode dinnerware. Glander's gift shop, which had originally occupied the entire 1st floor, was discontinued in 1936. The floor was divided and rental space made available. The Book and Gift Shop, owned by Violet and Norbert Kustka, carries books, school and office supplies, greeting cards, gifts, religious supplies and toys, which are on the lower level. Their shop was in this location from 1943-1955, when it moved to 831 S. 8th Street. The Jensen Ready-To-Wear Shop at 820 Washington Street, owned by Clarence Jensen and managed by Laura Beaton, features women's and children's clothing. Jensen's occupied this location, which was a branch of their main Two Rivers store, from 1938-1950. The Two Rivers store continued in operation.
